Max Crown: His Coronet Now Weighs a GRAM

Note: This set of notes is about Alpha Compute's September and October 2026 positioning moves. This short post is derived from our on-going reseearch into Telegram and the companies in its orbit. Remember, the statements in this essay are from my notes and should be viewed as working hypotheses. Verify before you trust any of my observations. These are ideas I captured as my team and I are working on "Post-Telegram Cyber Crime: The Agentic Era." Keep these disclaimers in mind as you review this document.

On May 4, 2026, Pavel Durov (the self-styled GOAT or greatest of all time Russian entrepreneur) rattled the already-wobbly world of Telegram, the TON Foundation, a couple of loosely-affiliated publicly traded companies, and an outfit doing business as Animoca Brands. Durov took back control of the Telegram blockchain technology and its crypto coin. Durov said that Telegram would replace the TON Foundation as shepherd of the Telegram blockchain technology, manage the Telegram crypto token, and become the largest validator of GRAMcoin transactions.

Then on May 20, 2026, the Handelsregister (the official Swiss commercial register) posted a notice that Max Crown was no longer a member of the TON Foundation's Council and the non-profit's chairperson. Furthermore his individual signing authority was terminated. Neither Telegram nor the TON Foundation are transparent organizations. What's odd about that May 20 announcement is that Max Crown continues to work at the TON Foundation as its president and CEO.

In June 2026, the Swiss law firm MLL Legal confirmed that it advises the TON Foundation. The law firm's work includes governance, day-to-day operations, GRAMcoin's (formerly TONcoin's) regulatory classification, token grants, donations, investments, and legal documents for partnerships. The engagement is significant because these subjects directly concern the TON Foundation's legal responsibilities following Durov's change in the organization's responsibilities. Early in October 2026, Switzerland implemented strengthened transparency and anti-money-laundering legislation. These measures increase scrutiny of certain legal entities, financial arrangements, and professional activities.

As I reviewed my notes about Max's leadership arabesque and these governance and legal matters, I was struck by how little information is available about what appear to be a seismic shake up in the marketing arm of Telegram. Among my questions about the reasons for these maneuvers are:

  1. Who initiated the change? Durov (now awaiting trial in France for serious online crimes) or the Board of Directors of the TON Foundation? They were already wrestling with the job of getting GRAM out of the discount shopping basement, attracting developers to the platform as Durov continues to cooperate with law enforcement, and generating the type of buzz that Telegram conferences generated prior to Durov's arrest in August 2024.
  2. Are Swiss regulators taking a close look at the original non-profit charter for the TON Foundation? Without responsibility for the Telegram blockchain and its crypto token, are there potential penalties the Swiss could level at Durov and the Foundation's senior leadership?
  3. Did Max Crown choose to distance himself from certain responsibilities within the TON Foundation – for example, the individual signing authority – or did his colleagues lose confidence or patience with his role as chairman and member of the Foundation's council?
  4. Has the pressure of the trial and the warrants issued for Durov by Australia and Russia, grousing by authorities in Belgium, heightened interest in Durov from other EU member states, and financial pressure from record losses in FY2025 triggering these significant changes in governance?
  5. Is Telegram realizing that it is in a precarious position with no succession plan if Durov goes to prison, the value of GRAM crypto continues to fall, and legal problems coming from multiple directions.
  6. What firm is auditing the TON Foundation's books? Is it Copartner Revision AG of Basel, PwC in Dubai, UAE, or a firm managed by Durov's financial manager, possibly a cipher using the handle "Marta Kudina" or Global Network Management's financial team?

Durov isn't talking. Crown isn't talking. The "core engineers" aren't talking. But something is causing Telegram and the TON Foundation to change core business operations.

Who Is Max Crown?

Max is a financial engineer. Before taking the job as the senior manager at Telegram, he worked at MoonPay. A company owned by Animoca Brands, MoonPay is woven into the Telegram ecosystem. One of the founders of MoonPay is Yat Siu, who has financial ties to Alpha Compute (a firm involved with Telegram's Cocoon initiative) and TON Strategy Company (a firm investing in GRAM tokens with the hope that these will increase in value and return a significant profit to the firm's backers and shareholders).

In 2018, Max co-founded MoonPay with Ivan Soto-Wright and Victor Faramond. At MoonPay, Crown served as chief financial officer and chief operating officer, developing financial controls, risk management procedures, banking relationships, and regulatory compliance arrangements.

He honed his financial engineering skills via a business degree from London's Cass Business School in 2004. He earned a master's degree in finance from London Business School in 2009 and additional post-graduate work at London Business School in 2014. Prior to MoonPay, he was with HODL.vc and different technology ventures. His résumé suggests experience as an advisor for frontier investors interested in opportunities in Brazilian real estate developments and distressed credit portfolios. I spotted some social media posts that suggested he was a capable manager. Before joining the TON Foundation, Max helped manage MoonPay's interaction with regulators in Malta, Texas, and a matter involving NFT operations.

He joined the TON Foundation in April 2025, replacing Manny Stotz, who departed to form the Telegram-centric TON Strategy Company via a reverse merger with VERB. The purpose of this deal was to obtain access to the US capital markets via VERB's Nasdaq listing. It is possible that Max's experience in regulatory matters influenced his arabesque at TON Foundation.

Switzerland and the TON Foundation

The TON Foundation is registered as a Swiss non-profit organization. The Foundation's WeWork-type office is in Zug, Switzerland. This city is the crypto heart of Switzerland. With shifting responsibility for the Telegram blockchain and management of the GRAMcoin from the Foundation to Telegram, it is possible that the Swiss regulators could have questions about:

  • Who at the TON Foundation can authorize Foundation contracts, expenditures, and token-related commitments?
  • A review of the TON Foundation's assets since GRAMcoin returned to Telegram's control.
  • Clarifying titles of Max Crown at the TON Foundation.
  • What legal entity is responsible for obligations before and after May 2026 when Telegram assumed control of the blockchain and the GRAMcoin?

Should Switzerland probe the change in TON Foundation responsibilities, responding to questions will chew into Pavel Durov's and Max Crown's schedule.

Net Net

The management responsibilities at the TON Foundation have not been communicated clearly. Information about why Telegram pulled back the blockchain and the control of the GRAMcoin and validation is limited. Telegram and the TON Foundation make significant staff and operational changes. Pavel Durov's approach to managing a large organization with many moving parts appears to be set up to limit visibility into what might be termed routine changes made in response to business conditions. However, with Pavel Durov's legal risks in France unresolved, I am not able to speculate about what these organizations' actions mean for users, partners, developers, and stakeholders.

One thing seems clear to me. Max has shifted to a position where his personal exposure seems to be limited due to his new role.
